11. Paradise Now! Notes The Living Theatre (1969) [P.101-109]

P.101

  • Julian Beck(JB): What do we have to say.....that gives us the right to make this play? .....Glimpses of the post-revolutionary world? Does that included glimpses of how to get there?
  • Judith Malina (JM): It would seem very unimportant to me if it didn't contain some suggestions of how to get there. For me it can't be political enough.

P.102

  • JB: Paradise Now! has to be, is, my, our message to the world. It has to be. The Mysteries are Warnings and Promises (Harold Norse). Frankenstein is the Empirical study of the Historical conditions. Antigone is the profound enactment of the moral and political predicament. Te achievement of the mise-en-scene of Antigone is the profundity of devices.

P.105

  • Gene Gordon (GG): This Paradise Now! has to be free. The people in Italy are not free. But neither do we show them everything of ourselves. I'm not playing a game, I'm giving my life. I'm ashamed we have to live in an economic system.
  • Jenny Hecht (JH): We have to stop thinking of the audience as Argives, as people beneath us to be taught. They are with us, are us.
