5. The Russian Notebook, 1934 Lee Strasberg (1973) [P.49-56]

  • P.49 ...I had little actual awareness of the training methods used at the Moscow Art Theatre. These methods, for me, were and still are the most total sense of acting contribution that I've ever seen.
  • There people in the Moscow Art Theatre created an intensity of conviction and reality on the stage that was really unbelievable.
  • P.51 In the work of the Realistic Theatre, no matter what the style of the production, you are always brought closer t the event, not just to the sense of style or theatricality.
  • Vakhtangov's value lay in dissociating the Stanislavsky System as a technique for the actor form the Stanislavsky method of production, thus, of course, the 'System' was enriched and improved. His own way certainly proved that the 'Method' in the proper hands did not produce only realistic acting, but that the process of 'inner justification' was a necessary technique in a creative process regardless of the style desired.
