7. Meyerhold's production of The Magnanimous Cuckold Nick Worral (1973) [P.60-72]

  • P. 61 His [Meyerhold's] experiments with new techniques of acting, which were to be called 'biomechanics', can be seen to relate to the Futurist emphasis on a technology of artistic 'production' harnessed to the verb as 'engine'.
  • Meyerhold's attitude toward the actor's creativity was one based on physiology rather than on inspiration.
  • The lasses which Meyerhold held in biomechanics were directly prior to his production of The Magnanimous Cuckold. The production became, among other things, a proving ground of his theories.
  • P.64 One can clearly see the connection with Meyerhold's selection of a character typology, based on popular theatrical forms, which he opposed to the ontological existence of Naturalist dramatic character.
