  • P.15 "Reign of the theatrical director" Bettina L. Knapp refers to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
  • P.16 One aim of naturalism, to affect real life in order to effect real like, swings on a pendulum between visibility and invisibility in complex and fascinating ways throughout the century.
  • At the Moscow Art Theatre, audience were encouraged to blind themselves to the performance bases of the display (or at least momentarily forget or 'suspend'), allowing those bases to become invisible.
