P.104 Caridad Svich: You were in Tokyo earlier this year for the 3rd Conference of Asian Women in Theatre, where your play Stargazers was presented in translation. What was that experience like for you?
Chiori Miyagawa: P.105 ...The presentation of the piece in Tokyo was a rather strange experience precisely because I understand the Japanese language and culture: so, the characters and events were recognisable to me, yet the play's tone and themes had become unfamiliar.
In English, my dialogues are spare. I'm interested in what is not said and how silence impacts the emotions of the moment. It literally takes many more Japanese words to accomplish my poetic intentions. The play runs about an hour and half in English; when presented in Japanese, it ran two and half hours.
