Space, Improvisation and Creativity (Phelim McDermott with Dick McCaw, 2005) DVD

The Space Exercise
  • Create great choreography. It is not about great ideas. It is about what's happening.....It is about nature but not having something great for your improvisational scene.

The Yes and Exercise

  • pair work
  • continue building the dialogue by 'Yes, and..............'
  • e.g. A says, 'Let's go shopping.' B replies, 'Yes and ask Sally to go with us.' A answers, 'Yes, and.....'
  • Try not to focus on making all new ideas.
  • Can focus on developing rather than throwing out new ideas.

Micheal Chekhov's movement qualities

  1. Moulding
  2. Floating
  3. Flying
  4. Radiating

The Newspaper exercise

Phrase 1

  • Each individual gets a piece of newspaper.
  • Don't touch it.
  • Try to read the words on it.
  • Then try to not read the words, only focus on the white bits of the newspaper.
  • Play with these two differences.
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Imagine how do your hands feel when they touch the newspaper.
  • If you are ready, touch the newspaper. Is the feeling same with what you imagine?

Phrase 2 [playing with object, it is inter-play with the performer and the object]

  • group work but starts with individual
  • using the newspaper as a puppet
  • play with it's identity [The material has its say too. It wants to play too]
  • if everyone has develop they own identity, newspaper can meet each other if they want.
  • when they meet each other, they may transform and become one new thing. Find the new focus of the object again.
  • Beware of the whole picture.
